New releases for 1 April 2016

1 April is a very nice week for new releases. If you don’t often buy instrumental rock albums, there are two coming out this week which are essential: Explosions In The Sky return with their first studio album for some time. Hundred Records favourite Black Mountain’s new album, IV, is unashamedly ambitious which is as it should be, Trembling Bells’ new 7-song mini-album, Wide Majestic Aire, acts as the perfect companion piece to last year’s acclaimed The Sovereign Self, Black Sabbath’s Changes sung soul-style shouldn’t work, but does so triumphantly in the hands of soul sensation Charles Bradley, the new Pet Shop Boys album is called Super, and it is. The Last Shadow Puppets’ new album is by turns snarling, soaring and seductive, Black Stone Cherry’s hard rocking Kentucky is brimful of both energy and good tunes. Album of the week belongs to the other instrumental album, Mogwai’s soundtrack Atomic is by turns ethereal, elegiac and deeply moving.
