Amongst the small but perfectly formed new releases for the 25th March is Bob Mould’s Patch the Sky, which boasts that rarest of things, a lovely balance of bright melody and dark story; talking of darkness, Birdy’s Beautiful Eyes has been described as about overcoming the dark, and it does a fine job of that. Joe Bonamassa’s finest studio work comes with the release of Blues of Desperation, an assured and mature album, and if your blues spot isn’t thoroughly hit, you don’t have one! The Joy Formidable’s new album is both hooky and riffy and sounds stadium-ready to me. Release of the week is Kris Drever’s If Wishes Were Horses, which is as fine an album of intimate and heartbreaking folk music as has been released this year.
