This week\u2019s ear-ticklers start with Public Service Broadcasting<\/strong>\u2019s fourth album, Bright Magic<\/em><\/strong>, which is their most ambitious undertaking yet \u2013 an album in three parts (Building A City \/ Building A Myth \/ Bright Magic) that brings you to Europe\u2019s heart and de facto<\/em> capital, the cultural and political metropolis that is the \u2018Haupstadt\u2019 of the Federal Republic of Germany. \u201cDoing this felt inevitable, somehow,<\/em>\u201d muses J. Willgoose, Esq. \u201cI knew the album was going to be about the city, and its history and myths, and I was going to move there. So it\u2019s quite a personal story.<\/em>\u201d Though PSB\u2019s use of electronics and surging guitar rock remain familiar, Bright Magic<\/em> differs from their previous albums in other ways: less linear and narrative, instead it\u2019s an impressionistic portrait of a city from the ground up.<\/p>\n

What makes a protest song? The Specials<\/strong> should know. First time around, back when the 70s were lurching into the 80s, they sang of racism, war, unemployment and the rough edges of urban life, and never in the same way twice. As the multiracial flagship of the 2 Tone movement, they made a political statement every time they stepped on stage. June 2021 saw the 40th anniversary of their greatest protest song, \u2018Ghost Town\u2019, a record that will retain its eerie power as long as there are concrete jungles, empty dancehalls and desperate spasms of violence. Protest Songs 1924\u20132012<\/em><\/strong> features twelve singular takes on protest songs specially chosen across an almost 100-year span and shows that The Specials still care, are still protesting and are still pissed off!<\/p>\n

How Beautiful Life Can Be<\/em><\/strong> is the debut album from Wigan\u2019s The Lathums<\/strong>. Kick-started by growing pains and life\u2019s unlucky twists, fuelled by the simple salvation of six guitar strings and supercharged by the fans that found them slogging their gear into pubs and small venues across the north of England, The Lathums\u2019 story may turn out to be the perfect not-all-nice-guys-finish-last tale.<\/p>\n

South Yorkshire band The Reytons<\/strong> (the \u2018right ones\u2019 to those from out of town) bring us their eagerly awaited debut album Kids Off The Estate<\/em><\/strong>. Produced by David Watts at Chairworks Studios, deep in the heart of Yorkshire, this album is bursting with working man grit and tales from the local boozer. Expect infectious riffs and refreshingly honest melodies that will travel round your mind for years to come.<\/p>\n

Last but certainly not least, the legendary Blancmange<\/strong> release a new album, Commercial Break<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 their fourteenth \u2013 which explores acoustic textures and field recordings within their synthesiser exoskeleton.<\/p>\n

Our release of the week is Sad And Beautiful World<\/em><\/strong>, the full-length follow up to Jesse Malin<\/strong>\u2019s 2019 album Sunset Kids<\/em>, which was co-produced by long-time lead guitarist Derek Cruz and Grammy-winning engineer Geoff Sanoff (Bruce Springsteen, Dion, Darlene Love). The album contains two songs produced by Lucinda Williams and Tom Overby, and features Ryan Adams, Dave \u2018Immy\u2019 Immergluck of Counting Crows, Tommy Stinson of The Replacements, and more.<\/p>\n
