This week\u2019s six smashers start with Latest Record Project: Volume 1<\/em><\/strong>, a 28-track delve into Van Morrison<\/strong>\u2019s ongoing love of blues, R&B, jazz and soul. It\u2019s his 42nd record and his most dynamic and contemporary album in years, and it\u2019s well worth your time.<\/p>\n

Musical pioneer Moby<\/strong>\u2019s new album, Reprise<\/em><\/strong>, finds him revisiting and reimagining musical highlights from his 30-year career. Together with the Budapest Art Orchestra, he has re-envisioned some of his most recognisable rave classics and anthems with new arrangements for orchestra and acoustic instruments. He\u2019s also joined by a stellar line-up of guest artists from across the musical spectrum, including Alice Skye, Amythyst Kiah, Apollo Jane, Darlingside, Gregory Porter, Jim James, Kris Kristofferson, Luna Li, Mark Lanegan, Mindy Jones, Nataly Dawn, Skylar Grey and V\u00edkingur \u00d3lafsson.<\/p>\n

Archive Series Volume No. 5: Tallahassee<\/em><\/strong> is the lost-in-time debut album from Iron & Wine<\/strong> \u2013 a collection of songs recorded three years prior to his official Sub Pop debut, The Creek Drank The Cradle<\/em> (2002), a period before the concept of Iron & Wine existed and principal songwriter Sam Beam was studying at Florida State University with the intent of pursuing a career in film. Tallahassee<\/em> documents the very first steps on a journey that would lead to a career as one of America\u2019s most original and distinctive singer-songwriters. Creek<\/em> arrived like a thief in the night with its lo-fi, hushed vocals and intimate nature, while Tallahassee<\/em> comes almost inversely with a strange sense of confidence. Perhaps an almost youthful discretion that likely comes from being too young to know better and too na\u00efve to give a shit. The recordings themselves are more polished than Creek<\/em> and give a peek into what a studio version of that record might have offered up.<\/p>\n

Cooked up in the Blue Note Lab, RMX<\/em><\/strong> presents last year\u2019s band-defining masterpiece, GoGo Penguin<\/em>, re-imagined through the filter of some of the world\u2019s finest producers and remixers. For RMX<\/em> the idea was both simple and inspired: commission a remix of every track from last year\u2019s album and present a total re-imagination of the record as a whole. In the end they went one better, with a remix of every track (and two of one) plus a remix of the track \u2018Petit_a\u2019, which was originally released only in Japan before surfacing on their Live From Studio 2<\/em> digital EP. The idea behind RMX<\/em> was also the catalyst for a remarkably inspired collaboration; the Manchester trio\u2019s music has always drawn heavily on electronica (alongside jazz, indie and classical influences) and so commissioning ten of their favourite artists from that world to rework their music made perfect sense \u2013 and the results are spectacular, one of the very best remix projects you will hear anywhere. Amongst the many highlights are Squarepusher\u2019s thumping remix of \u2018F Maj Pixie\u2019, alongside Japanese producers Cornelius and Yosi creating sublime new landscapes with the band\u2019s music on \u2018Kora And Embers\u2019. James Holden assembles an epic synth odyssey around \u2018Totem\u2019 and Portico Quartet produce a sympathetic reworking of \u2018Don\u2019t Go\u2019. Band faves Clark and Nathan Fake produce inimitable reworkings as does noted French producer Rone, while American producer Machine Drum turns \u2018Atomised\u2019 into dance floor-friendly belter. Finally, the band have not forgotten their hometown \u2013 Manchester is well represented, with remixes from elder statesman and dance music legend Graham Massey (808 State) and new discovery Shunya, whose enigmatic reworking of \u2018To The Nth\u2019 almost steals the show.<\/p>\n

education entertainment recreation<\/em><\/strong> is a brand-new live album from New Order<\/strong>, recorded at London\u2019s Alexandra Palace on 9 November 2018 at the band\u2019s only UK show of that year. Sonically spectacular and spanning 2 hours 20 minutes, the show joyously mixes New Order classics, their latest acclaimed studio album Music Complete<\/em> and Joy Division\u2019s finest work. Opening with \u2018Singularity\u2019 from Music Complete<\/em>, they eased back in time to 1993\u2019s \u2018Regret\u2019, \u2018Love Vigilantes\u2019 from 1985\u2019s Low-Life<\/em> and \u2018Ultraviolence\u2019 from 1983\u2019s Power, Corruption And Lies<\/em>. Later, they demonstrated their power over the dance floor with sublime performances in the manner of their celebrated extended 12-inch remixes \u2013 on \u2018True Faith\u2019, \u2018Blue Monday\u2019 and \u2018Temptation\u2019 \u2013 before a four-song Joy Division mini-set to end the evening.<\/p>\n

Our release of the week is one of 2021\u2019s most highly anticipated albums. Squid<\/strong>\u2019s debut, Bright Green Field<\/em><\/strong>, is a work of towering scope and ambition: deeply considered, paced and intricately constructed. With all band members playing such a vital and equal role, this album is very much the product of five heads operating as one. Some bands might be tempted to include previous singles on their debut \u2013 and the band had already released \u2018Sludge\u2019 and \u2018Broadcaster\u2019 in 2020 \u2013 but instead Bright Green Field<\/em> is completely new material. This sense of limitlessness and perpetual forward motion is one of the the key ingredients that makes Squid so loved by fans and critics alike.<\/p>\n
