This week\u2019s 6 lovelies start with Wolf Parade<\/strong>\u2019s fifth album, Thin Mind<\/em><\/strong>, which has sci-fi, post-apocalyptic and dystopian narratives interwoven throughout. These themes emerged while working at Risqu\u00e9 Disque, which Dan Boeckner jokingly describes as a Dutchman\u2019s failed utopia, a problematic structure with a post-apocalyptic vibe: the studio is housed in a stone barn hand-built by a Dutchman in the middle of the woods, using local materials.<\/p>\n

Navarasa: Nine Emotions<\/em><\/strong> is Yorkston\/Thorne\/Khan<\/strong>\u2019s third release, and takes their journey many, many leagues on. At the heart of YTK\u2019s transporting new album is the navarasa<\/em>; the nine (nava<\/em>) emotions or sentiments (rasa<\/em>) of the arts. This central unifying underpinning is a centuries-old organising principle. The individual artistic emotions range from shringara<\/em> (love, beauty) through hasya<\/em> (laughter, mirth, comedy), raudra<\/em> (anger), karuna<\/em> (sorrow, compassion or mercy), bibhatsya<\/em> (disgust), bhayanaka<\/em> (horror, terror), veera<\/em> (heroism, courage), adbutha<\/em> (surprise, wonder) to shanta<\/em> (peace, tranquillity).<\/p>\n

Wire<\/strong> exhibit little inclination to look back \u2013 rather, they remain resolutely focused on producing music which is smart, vital and defiantly modern. Mind Hive<\/em><\/strong> is the group\u2019s first newly recorded material since 2017\u2019s Silver\/Lead<\/em>. That album garnered rave reviews and career best sales. Yet, if Silver\/Lead<\/em> set the bar pretty high, Mind Hive<\/em> seems to have no problem vaulting over it. It is difficult to understand quite how a group that has been operating for such a long period is still able to produce such exciting and essential work. And yet here we are \u2026<\/p>\n

Formed in Oxford in 1993, Supergrass<\/strong> went on to sell millions of albums, including six top ten albums and ten top 20 singles. After a ten-year haitus, the band have re-formed. Career retrospective The Strange Ones<\/em><\/strong> reminds us how good they were (and still are) and charts their success with classics from 1994 to 2008.<\/p>\n

40 years after Elton John<\/strong> became the first major Western pop star to play the USSR, the seminal performance Live From Moscow 1979<\/em><\/strong> with percussionist Ray Cooper finally gets a full release. A sensation from start to finish, with pared-down, unique versions of Elton classics like \u2018Daniel\u2019, \u2018Saturday Night\u2019s Alright For Fighting\u2019 and \u2018Bennie And The Jets\u2019, plus cover versions of \u2018I Heard It Through The Grapevine\u2019, \u2018Get Back\u2019 and \u2018Back In The USSR\u2019, the 1979 Russian tour has gone down in history as one of the landmark moments in rock history as well as being a personal career highlight for Elton, who says: \u201cIt was one of the most memorable and happy tours I have been on. The last show was probably one of the best concerts I\u2019ve ever given in my life.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Our release of the week is Hotspot<\/em><\/strong>, the last instalment of the trilogy of Pet Shop Boys<\/strong> albums produced by Stuart Price, following Electric<\/em> in 2013 and Super<\/em> in 2016. Hotspot<\/em> was mostly recorded in Hansa Studios, Berlin, and mixed at The Record Plant, Los Angeles. Pet Shop Boys say: \u201cWe\u2019ve written much of our music over the last ten years in Berlin and it was an exciting experience to work on this album in the legendary Hansa studios there and add a new dimension to our sound.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n
