We have six stormers to start the year off, all released on 18th January<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, Steve Mason<\/strong>\u2019s latest, About The Light<\/em><\/strong>, follows up 2016\u2019s Meet The Humans<\/em>. Having written most of his previous albums alone, About The Light<\/em> marks a change in approach for Steve. \u201cI\n decided with this album that I wanted to get my live band involved at \nevery stage because I wanted to capture the energy that we produce when \nwe play live shows, so this time the band and myself worked on a \ncollection of songs over the course of last year.<\/em>\u201d The goal was to capture the songs live and draw out their soulful elements. \u201cDavid\n Bowie said that you should always be slightly out of your comfort zone \nif you want to achieve greatness, and for the first time perhaps ever, I\n deliberately pushed myself into that place. Who doesn\u2019t want greatness?<\/em>\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For over a decade, guitarist and vocalist Steve Gunn<\/strong>\n has been one of American music\u2019s pivotal figures, conjuring immersive \nand psychedelic sonic landscapes both live and on record, and releasing \nrevered solo albums ranking high on in-the-know end of year lists \nalongside exploratory collaborations with artists as diverse as Mike \nCooper, Kurt Vile and Michael Chapman (whose most recent studio album he\n produced). Gunn is known for telling other people\u2019s stories, but on his\n breakthrough fourth album, The Unseen In Between<\/em><\/strong>, he explores his own emotional landscapes with his most complex, fully realised set of songs to date. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As thrilling and unpredictable as anything in Deerhunter<\/strong>\u2019s near 15-year career, Why Hasn\u2019t Everything Already Disappeared?<\/em><\/strong>\n was recorded at several strategic geographic points across North \nAmerica, and produced by the band, Cate LeBon, Ben H. Allen III and Ben \nEtter. Forgetting the questions and making up unrelated answers, \nDeerhunter\u2019s eighth LP is a science-fiction album about the present. \nExhausted with the toxic concept of nostalgia, they reinvent their \napproach to microphones, the drum kit, the harpsichord, the \nelectromechanical and synthetic sounds of keyboards. Whatever guitars \nare left are pure chrome, plugged straight into the mixing desk with no \namplifier or vintage warmth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the 2015 release of the critically acclaimed Fast Forward<\/em>, legendary songwriter Joe Jackson<\/strong> is releasing the 20th studio album of his career. Fool<\/em><\/strong>\n is the fulfilment of a career-long dream: to finish a tour and head \nstraight into the studio with the band firing on all cylinders. So, on \n29 July, Joe wrapped up his 2018 summer tour at The Egyptian Theatre in \nBoise, Idaho \u2013 and the following day set up shop at Tonic Room Studios \nin town. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From their unassuming origins as a group of school friends drawn \ntogether by a shared passion for music to the global touring force they \nhave quietly become, The Twilight Sad<\/strong>\u2019s ascent has been\n forged the old way with grit, graft and four exceptional studio albums.\n Now signed to Mogwai\u2019s Rock Action Records, the band\u2019s fifth album, It Won\u2019t Be Like This<\/em><\/strong>, does not disappoint and will certainly delight fans of their previous work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our release of the week is Remind Me Tomorrow<\/em><\/strong> from Sharon Van Etten<\/strong>. Coming four years after Are We There<\/em>,\n her latest reckons with the life that gets lived when you put off the \nsmall and inevitable in favour of something more present. Throughout the\n album, Van Etten veers towards the driving, dark glimmer moods that \nhave illuminated the edges of her music and pursues them full force. \nThis is an ambitious album with curling low vocals and brave intimacy, \nthat provokes our most sensitive impulses: reckless affections, spirited\n nurturing, and tender courage. The songs are as resonant as ever, the \nthemes are still an honest and subtle approach to love and longing, but \nproducer\/arranger John Congleton has plucked out new idiosyncrasies from\n Van Etten\u2019s sound.<\/p>\n\n\n
