  • Bruce Springsteen - The Ties That Bind: The River Collection
    • Bruce Springsteen  The Ties That Bind: The River Collection    SOLD OUT
  • The Ties That Bind: The River Collection is a comprehensive look at era in which Bruce Springsteen’s legendary album The River was created. The set contains 52 tracks on 4 CDs with a wealth of unreleased material, and 4 hours of never-before-seen video on 3 DVDs. It comprises: the original The River double album; the first official release of The River: Single Album; a CD of studio out-takes from 1979–80; a two-DVD film of never-released, newly edited multi-camera footage from Springsteen’s famed 1980 show in Tempe, Arizona, long-rumoured but never seen before; rare tour rehearsal footage; a brand-new documentary, ‘The Ties That Bind’; and a coffee-table book of 200 rare or previously unseen photos and memorabilia with a new essay by Mikal Gilmore.
  • The River, Springsteen’s fifth album, was released on 17 October 1980 as a double album and reached number 1 on the US Billboard 200 chart. In his notes, Gilmore calls The River Springsteen’s ‘pivotal album – [the] hinge between the ambitious commotions that had preceded it and the more succinct musical riots, and sometimes terrifying storytelling, that followed.
  • ‘The Ties That Bind’ is a brand new 60-minute documentary produced and directed by Zimny that features an intimate interview with Springsteen in which he reflects on the tumultuous, extended period writing and recording The River. The film transitions between Springsteen telling the stories behind the music – and illustrating them with solo acoustic guitar performances – interspersed with period concert footage and rare photos of Bruce and the band in and out of the studio.
  • The Ties That Bind: The River Collection is packaged in a 10" x 12" box with a hardcover 148-page coffee table book containing 200 studio and live photographs – most of which have never been seen before – plus pages from Springsteen’s notebooks, single covers, images and out-takes from the original album package, and other memorabilia documenting the album. Liner notes include a new essay from journalist Mikal Gilmore, the original Rolling Stone album review from 1980, and Springsteen’s updated comments about the album from the 1998 book Songs.

    Released 20 November 2015

      • The Comsat Angels  4 Vinyl Reissues
    • Named after the J.G. Ballard story of the same name, The Comsat Angels were born in the UK’s post-punk era. One of the most underrated acts of the early 80s, the Sheffield four-piece twinned together sparse, economical musicianship and a large sound. While other bands of the era with a big sound, such as U2, Simple Minds, Echo and the Bunnymen and the Teardrop Explodes, achieved mainstream success, The Comsat Angels never made the breakthrough into the main arena. Perhaps too dark for populist tastes at the time, their music has been described as ‘abstract pop songs with spare instrumentation, many of which were bleak and filled with some form of heartache.’
    • Unjustly overlooked for their important contribution to music, their influence however, is enormous; the haunting atmospherics and simply played but expansive nature of their music has has a direct effect on countless post-punk revival bands, including Blacklist, Bell Hollow, Editors and Interpol.
    • The Comsats’ first three albums all receive the deluxe treatment: the introspective, but absorbing debut album Waiting For A Miracle; the intense, monumental follow-up Sleep No More and the understated and equally under-rated third, Fiction.
    • Also, reissued for the first time, is the long out-of-print album Chasing Shadows, which lists Robert Palmer (a constant champion of the band) as co-producer.
    • These albums prove beyond all reasonable doubt that while commercial recognition may have eluded the Sheffield-based quartet, they still accumulated one of the most enviable, enduring and unsung catalogues known to rock.
    • Included in the deluxe editions are non-LP singles, demos and BBC radio session tracks, plus booklets with rare photos, memorabilia and detailed liner notes.

    • The Sisters Of Mercy - Floodland Era Vinyl box set

      • The Sisters Of Mercy  Floodland Era Vinyl box set
    • The first phase of The Sisters Of Mercy came to an end when the band broke up soon after finishing the tour for their 1985 debut, First And Last And Always. Undaunted, the group’s founder and frontman Andrew Eldritch continued to make music, aided by his ever faithful drum machine Doktor Avalanche. The Sisters of Mercy came back stronger than ever in 1987 with their second album, Floodland, an even bigger commercial and artistic breakthrough.
    • The second incarnation of The Sisters – which featured bassist Patricia Morrison of Gun Club and The Damned – explored new sonic avenues on Floodland. The tone was still dark and brooding, but now the guitars shared space with keyboards and the rich orchestrations of producer Jim Steinman (Meat Loaf) on tracks like ‘This Corrosion’ and ‘Dominion/Mother Russia’. When the album was released in November 1987, it climbed the charts in the UK where it reached the Top Ten.
    • Along with the studio album, Floodland Era Vinyl box set includes a trio of 12" singles from that era: ‘This Corrosion’, ‘Dominion’ and ‘Lucretia My Reflection’. It features a different mix of the title track, along with the non-LP B-sides ‘Torch’ and ‘Colours’.
    • The 12" version of the second single ‘Dominion’ also appears in this set. It contains a different mix of ‘Dominion’, as well as three additional tracks: ‘Untitled’, ‘Sandstorm’ and their unique cover of Hot Chocolate’s ‘Emma’. The third single, ‘Lucretia My Reflection’ is represented here by the nine-minute 12" version from 1988 that features the B-side ‘Long Train’, originally recorded in 1984. This new boxed set marks the digital debut of several of the songs featured on the 12" singles.

    • David Bowie - Golden Years – 40th Anniversary Picture Disc Series
        order
      • David Bowie  Golden Years – 40th Anniversary Picture Disc Series
    • Golden Years will be the last of the David Bowie 40th anniversary 7" picture discs for 2015.
    • Originally released on 21 November 1975, ‘Golden Years’ had a lot to live up to: 1975 was a good year for Bowie chart action. ‘Fame’ had given Bowie his first US number 1, and the re-release of ‘Space Oddity’ became Bowie’s first UK number 1. ‘Golden Years’ made it into the Top Ten in the UK, peaking at #8. Nevertheless, it was a great advert for the upcoming Station To Station album, even though it was a bit of a curveball stylistically. The generally upbeat flavour of ‘Golden Years’ didn’t begin to hint at the emotionally cold Thin White Duke who was waiting in the wings of 1976.
    • Both sides feature photos by Steve Schapiro. The AA side is a previously unpublished shot.
    • Various Artists - Back to the River: More Southern Soul Stories 1961–78
        order
      • Various Artists  Back to the River: More Southern Soul Stories 1961–78
    • Kent’s first anthology of Southern Soul – the award-winning Take Me To The River – was critically and publicly acclaimed in equal measure. It has gone on to become one of the best-selling items in the Ace catalogue and continues to sell well more than half a decade after its release.
    • Southern Soul has so many stories to tell that a second collection was inevitable. Back To The River has taken the premise of its predecessor and expanded its brief to bring you soul not only from the south, but also southern-styled music from the north, east and west of the United States. As before, the 75 tracks run the gamut from well-known classics to little-known and highly valuable obscurities, topped off with a generous helping of previously unissued titles by familiar names. The booklet abounds with rare photos, and once again each of the 75 tracks gets its own individual annotation. Some of the greatest names in soul music can be heard at their best in a total playing time that runs just a fraction under four hours. Kent’s commitment to Southern soul remains as strong as ever and there’s much more of it to come in the future.

    Released 30 October 2015

      • Van Morrison
    • Van Morrison - Astral Weeks (Expanded & Remastered)
        order
      • Astral Weeks (Expanded & Remastered)  CD £9.99
    • Astral Weeks failed to make the charts when it was released in the autumn of 1968. Over the years, however, the album has achieved a near-mythic status across generations of listeners who have ‘ventured in the slipstream’ and fallen under the music’s spell. Any best-of list is unthinkable – and worthless – without it. This version will include the mythical and long-rumoured long version of ‘Slim Slow Slider’ – the album version of which, as fellow Van obsessives will know, fades out in mid-flow before 3 minutes is up.
    • Bonus tracks (previously unreleased)
    • 1. Beside You (Take 1)
    • 2. Madame George (Take 4)
    • 3. Ballerina (long version)
    • 4. Slim Slow Slider (long version)
    • Van Morrison - His Band And The Street Choir (Expanded & Remastered)
        order
      • His Band And The Street Choir (Expanded & Remastered)  CD £9.99
    • Following Moondance’s breakthrough success, His Band And The Street Choir arrived in November 1970. While Astral Weeks and Moondance contemplate the cosmos and love’s rich conundrums, Street Choir resonates with a purposefully loose ebullience on songs like the Top Ten hit ‘Domino’, ‘Blue Money’ and ‘Call Me Up In Dreamland’.
    • This remastered version of the album is expanded with five previously unreleased bonus tracks, including an early, raw take of ‘Give Me A Kiss’ without piano, horns or backing vocals. Morrison’s impressive falsetto gets a workout on Take 3 of ‘Gypsy Queen,’ while the band turns up the funk on the greasy alternate version of ‘I’ve Been Working’ featured here.
    • Bonus tracks (previously unreleased)
    • 1. Call Me Up In Dreamland (Take 10)
    • 2. Give Me A Kiss (Take 3)
    • 3. Gypsy Queen (Take 3)
    • 4. I’ve Been Working (alternate version)
    • 5. I’ll Be Your Lover, Too (alternate version)
    • Otis Redding - Soul Manifesto: 1964-1970
        order
      • Otis Redding  Soul Manifesto: 1964-1970
    • With his powerful voice and boundless energy, Otis Redding helped define the sound of Sixties soul like no other male singer. Before his untimely death, the Georgia singer recorded an unrivalled body of work with the Stax Records house band that includes such incomparable classics as ‘Try A Little Tenderness’, ‘Pain In My Heart’, and the number 1 hit ‘(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay’.
    • Soul Manifesto: 1964–1970 offers an in-depth look at Redding’s remarkable career, including his 1964 debut, Pain In My Heart, and 1967’s King & Queen, an album he recorded with singer Carla Thomas and the last studio album released during his lifetime. The set also comes with four posthumous releases, including 1968’s The Dock Of The Bay, which topped the R&B chart that year.
    • With the albums on Soul Manifesto, Redding forever raised the benchmark for singers with his unforgettable performances on indispensable tracks like ‘Tramp’, ‘Shake’, ‘Security’, ‘Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)’, ‘I Can’t Turn You Loose’, ‘Mr. Pitiful’, and ‘Chained And Bound’.
    • The collection features the eight studio and live albums that Redding recorded between 1964 and 1967, as well as several essential posthumous sets.
    • Albums included:
    • Pain In My Heart (1964) / The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads (1965) / Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul (1965) / The Soul Album (1966) / Complete & Unbelievable: The Otis Redding Dictionary Of Soul (1966) / King & Queen – with Carla Thomas (1967) / Live In Europe (1967) / The Dock Of The Bay (1968) / The Immortal Otis Redding (1968) / In Person At The Whisky A Go Go (1968) / Love Man (1969) / Tell The Truth (1970)

    • Trader Horne - Morning Way
        order
      • Trader Horne  Morning Way
    • Originally released on Pye’s alt-label Dawn, Trader Horne’s Morning Way is widely agreed to be one of the unsung musical treasures of the 70s. Judy Dyble (Fairport Convention / Giles, Giles & Fripp, amongst others) and Jackie McAuley (Them) formed Trader Horne in 1969, naming their group – so the legend goes! – after John Peel’s nanny. By turns folk (‘Jenny May’), pop (‘Sheena’) and something altogether more esoteric (‘Velvet To Atone’), Trader’s only album is a shining example of the cult British psychedelic era.
    • The LP comes with high-quality download, which includes two additional non-album tracks, Here Comes The Rain and Goodbye Mercy Kelly (which are included on the CD).

Finally remastered from the original tapes, this 45th anniversary edition is at long last available on vinyl again.

    • Queen - The Studio Collection
        order
      • Queen  The Studio Collection
    • Queen always had a special fondness for vinyl, the medium in which they first began to create, around 1970. As a matter of principle, every Queen studio album was offered at the time of original release on vinyl, even well into the era when CDs had taken over as the medium of choice for most of the public. However, the final two albums, Innuendo and Made In Heaven, were actually formatted primarily with the CD in mind, and had a longer running time, so the contents had to be edited down to fit them on to the two sides of a vinyl album. Now, especially for this edition, for the first time, these two albums have been cut at full length as double vinyl LPs – four sides each – making up a vinyl set that is complete in every way.
    • The box set offers many other special features. Most noticeable is the coloured vinyl: designed for collectors, each album has been given a different colour, in keeping with its original artwork, giving a unique record-deck experience. The coloured discs have been custom-produced especially for this set, using new material technology which ensures the sound quality is uncompromised.
    • There are more surprises in the box set: Queen II originally never had designated A- and B-sides, but ‘Side White’ and ‘Side Black’. For this new edition, the album has been cut on two separate discs, black and white, each with a custom etching on the reverse side, a nice bonus for collectors.
    • The 18-LP box set comes with a lavishly illustrated 12" x 12" 108-page hardback book which features introductions to each album, quotes from Queen themselves, hand-written lyrics, rare photographs, memorabilia, and information on singles and videos – all made possible with unlimited access to Queen’s own archive plus the personal archives of Brian May, Roger Taylor and some generous fans.
    • Albums included
    • Queen (1973) / Queen II (1974) / Sheer Heart Attack (1974) / A Night at the Opera (1975) / A Day at the Races (1976) / News of the World (1977) / Jazz (1978) / The Game (1980) / Flash Gordon (1980) / Hot Space (1982) / The Works (1984) / A Kind of Magic (1986) / The Miracle (1989) / Innuendo (1991) / Made in Heaven (1995)

    • Contents
    • Disc 1: Spectrum (1973) / Disc 2: Crosswinds (1974) / Disc 3: Total Eclipse (1974) / Disc 4: Shabazz (1975) / Disc 5: A Funky Thide Of Sings (1975) / Disc 6: Life & Times (1976) / Disc 7: Live On Tour In Europe (with George Duke) (1976) / Disc 8: Inner Conflicts (1978)
    • Nino Rota - The Godfather Part II o.s.t.
        order
      • Nino Rota  The Godfather Part II o.s.t.
    • The Godfather Part II is the Academy Award-winning soundtrack from the film of the same name, first released in 1974. This original score was composed by Nino Rota and conducted by Carmine Coppola. Rota expands upon two of the three main themes from the first film: ‘The Godfather Waltz’ and ‘Michael’s Theme’, while ‘The Love Theme’ from the first film makes a brief appearance during a flashback sequence. There are several new themes, including one for Kay (Diane Keaton), and two for the young Vito (Robert De Niro).
    • In 1974, the soundtrack won the Academy Award for original music score/original dramatic score, and it was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for best original score.
    • First pressing of 1000 numbered copies on red transparent vinyl.

      • Taste  What’s Going On – Live at the Isle of Wight
    • Originally formed in Cork, Ireland in 1966 by Rory Gallagher, Taste had a brief but influential career, releasing two studio albums in 1969 and 1970, before disbanding shortly after their legendary appearance at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival – a performance captured on this album. This expanded CD includes four additional tracks which were not included on the original 1971 release. Rory Gallagher would go on to enjoy an acclaimed and highly successful solo career and this electrifying show by Taste is an early example of Rory s justified reputation as the ultimate live performer.

      • Nirvana  Nirvana
    • Nirvana’s eponymous 7 x platinum-selling posthumous collection makes its debut on deluxe 45rpm double LP on heavyweight 180-gram vinyl with a digital download card, as well as a standard 33rpm single LP 180-gram heavyweight vinyl edition which also includes a download card.
    • The Faces - You Can Make Me Dance, Sing, Anything
        order
      • The Faces  You Can Make Me Dance, Sing, Anything
    • The Faces squeezed a lifetime’s worth of rock ’n’ roll into just five years. But despite their relatively short time together, Kenney Jones (drums), Ronnie Lane (bass/vocals), Ian McLagan (keyboard), Rod Stewart (vocals) and Ronnie Wood (guitar/vocals) have earned a spot on the short list of the world’s greatest rock bands.
    • This brand new boxed set features newly remastered versions of all four of the Faces’ studio albums, plus a bonus disc of rarities. All of the music has been remastered from the original analogue tapes and approved by the surviving band members. Without a doubt, this is the best-sounding version of the band’s music ever released.
    • The limited edition vinyl LP set You Can Make Me Dance, Sing Or Anything (1970-1975) includes: The First Step (1970), Long Player (1971), A Nod Is As Good As A Wink … To A Blind Horse (1971), Ooh La La (1973) along with the bonus disc from the CD set. To deliver superior audiophile quality, each album was cut from the original analogue master tapes directly to lacquers and pressed on 180-gram heavyweight vinyl. The records will come packaged in sleeves that accurately recreate the original release. For instance, when you push the sleeve for Ooh La La, the man’s eyes move and his mouth opens, creating a look that’s reminiscent of Terry Gilliam’s animation work with Monty Python.
    • In addition to the studio albums, the collection also features a bonus disc that gathers up nine essential tracks that didn’t appear on proper albums, including the 1973 single ‘Pool Hall Richard’, a live performance of the Temptations’ ‘I Wish It Would Rain’ from the 1973 Reading Festival, and ‘Dishevelment Blues’, a song that came free as a flexi-disc in copies of the New Musical Express.

    Released 21 August 2015

      • John Lennon  5 Vinyl Reissues
    • If John Lennon had only been one of the four members of The Beatles, his artistic immortality would already have been assured. John brought a vision of life that was simultaneously reflective, utopian and poignantly realistic.
    • But it was only after the breakup of The Beatles in 1970 that the figure the world now recognizes as ‘John Lennon’ truly came into being. Whether he was engaging in social activism, giving long, passionate interviews that broadened the nature of public discourse for artists, defining a new life as a self-described ‘househusband’, or writing and recording songs, Lennon came to view his life as a work of art in which every act shimmered with potential meaning for the world at large. It was a Messianic attitude, to be sure, but one that was tempered by an innate inclusiveness and generosity. ‘You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one,’ he sang in ‘Imagine,’ which has become his best-known song and an international anthem of peace. ‘I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will live as one.’
    • Such imagery, coupled with the tragedy of his murder in 1980, has often led to Lennon being sentimentalised as a gentle prince of peace gazing off into the distance at an Eden only he could see. In reality, he was a far more complex and difficult person, which accounts in part for the world’s endless fascination with him.

    • To quote the very great John Peel, ‘The question I’m always asked about The Fall is: “Which album should I start my collection with?” My short answer is that you have to get them all.’
    • Nothing much sounds like The Fall, and on Live At The Witch Trials and Dragnet, featuring one of the classic Fall line-ups, they sound like nothing else. Live At The Witch Trials, their debut album, contains the mighty ‘Industrial Estate’ and Dragnet contains ‘Psykick Dance Hall’, both of which are worth the admission price on their own. Now available on vinyl for the first time in eons, they won’t last for ever so grab one whilst the grabbing’s good!

      • Red House Painters  4 vinyl re-issues
    • At last, if you missed out on the RSD 2015 box set containing the above albums, they are now available individually after many years of being out of print. What better way to start a life-time’s addiction to the doings of Mark Kozelek than the first four Red House Painters albums. Health Warning – Kozelek is prolific under a number of different names; I must have nearly 50 different releases tucked away at home, including, strangely, two AC/DC covers albums, which are weirdly brilliant!

      • Keith Hudson  Entering The Dragon
    • This 1974 release by Keith Hudson is something of a lost gem – with his gravelly vocal style gaining more and more prominence in recent years. Housed in some sunshine cover art, Entering The Dragon – with the man Keith bringing an abrasive edge that probably sounded quite startling in its day – now acts as a sign-post to the dancehall/hip-hop evolutions that were to come. With particular highlights including ‘Will You Come Out Tonight’, ‘It Was When Friends Started to Talk About You’ and ‘Rage Of Love’.

      • Roger Waters  Amused to Death
    • An unblinking look at an entertainment-obsessed society, Amused to Death addresses issues that have only grown in complexity and urgency over the past two decades. With Amused to Death, Roger Waters sounded the alarm about a society increasingly – and unthinkingly – in thrall to its television screens. Twenty-three years later, Amused to Death speaks to our present moment in ways that could scarcely have been anticipated two decades ago. Today, television is just one option in an endless array of distractions available to us anytime, anywhere, courtesy of our laptops, tablets and smartphones. With eyes glued to our screens, the dilemmas and injustices of the real world can easily recede from view. The 2015 CD edition features remastered audio.
    • There is also a picture disc double LP of this album, also priced at £34.99. Please specify if you want this when ordering.

      • Michael Head & The Strands  The Magical World of The Strands
    • The Magical World of The Strands, finally reissued after being criminally out of print for an age, is an album of exquisite beauty. Very few albums like this are made anymore. It is music stripped to the basics: lovely songwriting and beautiful musicianship. Imagine a melange of Bryter Layter, Astral Weeks, Forever Changes and Harvest and you are getting somewhere near the sound of this superb album.
